As a child I remember all of my summers and the adventures that came with them. Summertime is all a kid can think of when they’re in school, and it’s so important as a parent to make sure the memories made last a lifetime.
With a long weekend coming up (and as a single father), I wanted to treat my children to an easy staycation where we could bond and get away from the norm for a few days. When looking for a place near me, it wasn’t hard: I chose The Woodlands Resort and Conference Center. The level of hospitality and luxury is incomparable, from the friendly receptionist who helped me check in, to the room service staff. Everyone had a smile on their face and was willing to go above and beyond for us. Nestled in a forest, surrounded by miles of green, championship golf courses with dining options ranging from a casual poolside café to the elegance of Robard’s Steakhouse – The Woodlands Resort is the perfect escape from your everyday grind.
The look on my kids’ faces when we arrived will stay with me forever. Their excitement was contagious as I opened the door to our room, through which they quickly bolted. The décor is chic and welcoming with its mildly lit room contrasted by natural light coming from large glass doors which lead to a relaxing patio. As tempted as I was to stay in the room, these kids had their bathing suits on in a second and looked at me as if there was something wrong with me since I was still dressed – ha-ha!
By default on behalf of my kids, of course, I spent most of my time at the resort’s amazing Forest Oasis Waterscape™ where we swam and played in the large pool for hours – just so you know, their slides are not just for kids. Adults are encouraged to set their inner child free, plunging down the slides. You can also simply relax and enjoy the coolness near the waterfalls. Next, we decided to head over to the lazy river and just float while we joked and laughed our little troubles away, but to our surprise another slide appeared halfway. There, my kids and I had a little competition on who could get the most air off the slide. My youngest won; his small frame was built for speed!
After a long day of fun in the sun, we made it back to our room where we had a little downtime and contemplated our next move. We agreed to call it a day and just hung out in the room. My kids enjoyed a cookie cake and a glass of milk courtesy of the Resort that night, but what I enjoyed the most were the big cheesy smiles on my babies’ faces.
The next morning we took a nice walk through The Woodlands Town Center (minutes away from the resort and filled with upscale shops and galleries to enjoy) where we planned our day over frozen yogurt. I rented a bike for my daughter as my boys and I had decided to take on the 5K bike trail on our skateboards! The cool shade from the Woodland’s signature canopy of trees provided a cool breeze as we glided through the wooded trail, racing to complete it so we could cool off at the pool and enjoy s’mores by the fire pit before dusk. We completed that night with a memorable showing of the Little Rascals. My kids had never watched it before that night, and as I sat there with them, it felt like my first time as well, laughing in synchrony with them (even though I have probably seen it a dozen times before).
Though our visit was short, I know the memories we made that weekend at The Woodlands Resort will last forever in my children’s minds. It’s the majestic presence of woods and natural beauty that make this place such an oasis for summertime memories.
