I recently attended the Watercolor Art Society-Houston’s Mandalas & Movement event at their Montrose headquarters. Tickets were $15 (I paid my way and didn’t go as an employee of LOCAL) but I got so much more than what I paid for.
Development Director Haley Bowen created this event to increase awareness for WAS-H, and her enthusiasm for what she does is inspiring. Thirty people came together at this specific event. I loved the sense of community and stepping out of my comfort zone. (I knew one person at this event.) We were led through a mandala lesson by Bowen and given all the tools to create our own. We did this for the first hour, more or less, and enjoyed wine and light bites. The effect of getting lost in the mandala creation was relaxing and the perfect partner for a yoga session which followed.
Yoga instructor Allison Zalkovsky of Black Swan Yoga Houston created a Mandala flow which we all flowed to among the current exhibition. We were in the shape of a Mandala and the practice followed a spherical theme in a lyrical, almost musical sense.
This was a creative pairing of art and movement in a way I’ve never experienced and can’t wait to see what WAS-H does next!
