Yes, it was a good night, Charlie. A night of live music and good drinks and bar bites. We actually don’t know anyone named Charlie these days, but we’re tempted to find one just to take them along with us on our next trip
to Montrose’s newest fancy saloon, open just over a month at press time, brought to you by one of our city’s finest master sommeliers. You did read that right because frankly, who says you have to do the same thing year in
and year out?
This ain’t no Camerata at Paulie’s (the master sommelier’s last adventure). Taking up a sizable block in Montrose off Westheimer, Goodnight Charlie’s really upped the ante on the city’s country music scene. It’s also a styling new building and parking lot (they can be stunning too!). Going all in on the classic yet modern farmhouse, Goodnight Charlie’s looks real nice with its metalroof and slatted wood on the exterior (including a nice patio). The interior revolves around the wooden dance floor, stage for live music, appropriate lighting, a Charles Goodnight portrait, huge tables for community-style seating on days there isn‘t live music, and a long bar fronting the wall which the kitchen sits behind for sitting and drinking, or at least quickly refilling drinks. It looks real purdy in here; we figure you’ll like it. The shows run every Friday and Saturday night with event details on the website – other nights, Goodnight Charlie’s should be your new go-to saloon. We found the service and the patrons friendly, which is always a must-have for a successful honky tonk.
Since wine does go with good people, two steppin’ and tasty tacos (take our word for it, try the food) you can get one of two, or both, of the draft Texas wines poured from a keg at Goodnight Charlie’s. Remember the master sommelier angle; it‘s reflected in these offerings. If you’re looking to go more traditional to the atmosphere, bottles and cans of all the regulars (Lone Star, Miller, Bud, etc.) are available or you can instead pick from one of five draft Houston craft beers. Or if you’re really going out tonight, do the Charles Goodnight, which is a shot of Charles Goodnight small batch bourbon and a pint of 8th Wonder Dome Faux’m, and a heck of a pick-me-up. Mr. Charles Goodnight himself would approve of this combo. We’re certain he’d approve of Goodnight Charlie’s, too.
