Caffeine Crawl Houston 2016 kicked off with a latte art throwdown, good eats and good vibes at Ahh, Coffee! on Thursday night. Competitors from local shops put up their best pours, and went home with great prizes from local sponsors. Friday meant an afternoon walking route through Montrose and an evening route for 9–5’ers. Paper Co. served up an El Salvador brew with toast, and Southside Espresso offered spiced honey butter macchiatos and a Yemen pourover from their own processing mill. New additions to the lineup this year included Tout Suite serving a housemade chai and Common Bond Café and Bakery, who took Crawlers through a guided tea cupping and served a twist on a coffee negroni with a rosemary-infused cold brew. Honeymoon Cafe & Bar wrapped up Friday routes with a Mexican coffee cocktail using Four Roses Bourbon.
Saturday morning brought the buzz with a bike route (led by the InterAmerican Coffee crew) kicking off at Retrospect Coffee Bar. In preparation for opening, they hosted a pop-up at Axelrad Beer Garden, serving Katz Coffee Mexican cold brew, Honeychild’s Sweet Creams frozen custard and housemade crepes and cereal. Another new Crawl stop, Red Dessert Dive, offered affogatos using a housemade Saint Arnold Brewing ice cream and Boomtown espresso, while Mercantile served cold brew or iced chai with the option of Mill King milk. Matt from Boomtown Coffee offered insight into their roasting works at The Honeymoon while Crawlers sipped macchiatos, and John of Argus Coffee Co. explained the process behind their whiskey barrel-aged coffee at Ahh, Coffee!
After placing at the recent U.S. Barista Championships regional qualifying event, David Buerher served his signature ‘breakfast macchiato’ at Blacksmith Coffee, and Robin Berwick and Robin Whalan offered Papua New Guinea cold brew and samples of housemade coffee liqueur at Double Trouble Caffeine and Cocktails. Two different iced tea samples and a take-home bag of Amaya Roasting Caffeine Crawl blend coffee awaited at Catalina Coffee, and Siphon Coffee demo’ed siphon brewing alongside housemade salted chocolate chip cookies. Crawlers left happy (and caffeinated!) with swag bags filled with goodies from Wholesome Sweeteners, Yelp Houston, Prana Chai, LOCAL Houston Magazine, roaster sponsors and participating shops. Caffeine Crawl Year Three in Houston was a blast and we can’t wait for next year!
